How podcasts are taking over Asia – airasia.com

Kerry-Ann Augustin, Senior Writer at airasia interviews GIG co-founders, Jasmine Low & Nikki Yeo about their podcasting experience. View the published article on airasia’s website. Kerry-Ann Augustin: You’ve been working on three different podcasts – Asia Fitness Today’s Kurang Manis, Move8 … what triggered the idea behind each of them? Jasmine Low: In February 2019, I had won a second prize from the Motion Picture Association International Script-to-Screen Workshop Malaysia for KURANG MANIS (Sugar, Less), a documentary about six Malaysians who bare all about their hopes and dreams about New Malaysia and what it means to be amongst one in two Malaysians who are obese. The prize was a trip to attend the Australian International Documentary Conference in Melbourne in March 2020. We attended this and learnt so much about factual content-making, and it also opened our minds about content distribution. Although Kurang Manis was to be a film project, MCO lockdowns in Malaysia and filming restrictions meant that co-producer Nikki and I had to improvise and to launch the documentary as a podcast first. This is an impact project inspired by our own health, spurred on by national health statistics that show Malaysia’s alarming figures of increasing non-communicable diseases and the objective of the project is to entertain while educating Malaysians about nutrition and sedentary lifestyles. So we buckled down, and self-funded and produced the first season of Help! I’m Prediabetic! The Kurang Manis (Sugar, Less) Podcast which rolled out on 9th February 2021. Our first season includes an impressive list of guests; 2020 Australian of the Year, Ophthalmologist and Chairman of Sight for All Foundation, Dr. James Muecke who champions diabetes awareness to prevent loss of sight and also The World Games Greatest Athlete of All Time (squash) Nicol David among other stellar guests which included scientists and physicians. We’re now in the planning stages of season two.  In addition to Kurang Manis, we also produce The Move8 Fit for Good Podcast where we interview fitness professionals who use their fitness for good. Here, we speak about exercise, movement therapy and strength building from a physical and mental standpoint. Thank you, airasia and Kerry-Ann! airasia berhad is a Malaysian multinational low-cost airline. The First Modern American Restaurant and Lounge opens in TREC Kuala Lumpur

March 8, 2018 Kuala Lumpur – Modern American restaurant Drop Bar and Lounge Sdn Bhd (Drop KL) opens today in the company of 150 invited guests at The Terraces, TREC on 438 Jalan Tun Razak in Kuala Lumpur. “The American Association of Malaysia aims to bring a feeling of home away from home to our members, with our American Hospitality styled social events.  Drop KL does this by offering regional American cuisine, with a modern twist. So no matter where in America you come from, you’ll be sure to find a taste from home,” said Ms. Jill Nanne, President of AAM as she officiated the soft launch. Drop KL is the latest Modern American casual dining restaurant and lounge to open in KL and offers customers the opportunity to Eat, Drink and Drop at a hip destination in TREC. Malaysians are invited to take “A Journey for the Senses” and taste Modern American slow-cooking methods, molecular beverages and international hospitality standards. Brainchild of Hong Kong-based entrepreneur and renowned music DJ Joel Lai, Certified Sommelier Alison Christ and Executive Chef Tim Jay, the trio helm Drop hospitality group with investments of US$850,000 pledged over the next three years in Malaysia. There are three different dining and drinking atmospheres at Drop KL; the main Zen-inspired casual dining room with private booths and high tables, a luxe black marble bar and a tropical alfresco area with views over the Royal Selangor Golf Club and KLCC Tower. An expansive yet-to-be-revealed rooftop bar will launch later in the year as part of Drop KL’s phase two. The ambiance has been created by renowned architect and interior designer Tracey Stoute who worked under the late Zaha Hadid and Sir Norman Foster before setting up his own practice, the award-winning Hong Kong firm EightSixThree. The 3,000 sq.ft. Drop KL marks a first in Malaysia for the firm after laying down plans for Drop Hong Kong, Apple, BMW, Dolce & Gabbana, Cartier and Zegna among other projects. “In building a global brand such as Drop, we chose Malaysia as our first overseas outlet due to its location in the region as a hub for business and leisure travellers. We are also impressed by Malaysia’s desire to raise hospitality and tourism standards and are eager to play a part in fulfilling that vision with our friendly and professional team,” said General Manager Alison Christ. Eat Executive Chef Tim Jay (TJay) presents the art of slow-food cooking and is influenced by European, Asian and Latin American heritage from North America, sourced from the freshest local ingredients from Asia Pacific. “I’ve incorporated flavours from traditional dishes while I was growing up in the US”, said Chef TJay. “The menu is influenced from my travels to the Middle East and Asia with a little homage to my Italian roots.” Chef TJay recommends starting the evening with Drop KL’s house-made flatbreads with toppings such as stewed rabbit, grilled artichokes and Taleggio cheese, or the blue cheese, miso smoked duck and goose foie gras version. Menu highlights include The Real Deal Mac and Cheese – a creamy mainstay with five cheeses, Go Ask Alice – a rabbit stew served with roasted with red peppers in chickpea ‘Sope’ and the Creole Sweet Potato Pie – a medley of seafood  in sauce nantua and gratineed sweet potatoes and the Japanese Wagyu strip served with Yuzu pickles. All food served is pork-free. Drink Drop KL offers a comfortable refuge from Jalan Tun Razak’s peak hour. Guests are invited to drop in for a taste of drinks originating from distilleries in all four corners of the globe. The Drop KL Aperitivo Hour from 5pm-8pm offers quality molecular beverages handcrafted by professional barman Tim Clark. For wine connoisseurs, Certified Sommelier Alison Christ has handpicked a selection of natural, biodynamic and organic wines to pair with your dinner. Drop KL will be open for dinner reservations from Tuesdays through to Saturdays from 5pm – late starting 13 March 2018. Pre-bookings ensure high quality standards as every meal is prepared on-site, and made from the freshest ingredients. The restaurant has a capacity for 100 persons standing and 80 persons seated. Drop The owners’ vision is to create a Journey for the Senses that brings together good food, quality drinks and great music in order to create the perfect night out when entertaining clients or partying with co-workers, friends or family. Before midnight, the main dining room transforms to serve chilled out tunes, fantastic voyages back to old school disco, or dancers breaking alongside Detroit deep house beats. Drop KL offers room for discovery and creativity as our music and entertainment component will be curated by founder Joel Lai himself, who has decades of experience as one of Asia’s best DJ’s and promoters of quality music.
