The hills are alive with The Sound of Music in Malaysia!

Source: The Art & Science of Wellness newsletter. The world’s best-loved musical, The Sound of Music, premieres in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia at the Istana Budaya from 27 December 2022 until 15 January 2023 with a brand-new international production. This highly acclaimed original production tells the uplifting true story of Maria, the fun-loving governess who changed the lives of the widowed Captain von Trapp and his seven children by re-introducing them to music and culminating the family’s flight across the Austrian mountains as tensions rise prior to the outbreak of World War II. The original 1959 Broadway production of The Sound of Music won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, a Grammy Award for Best Show Album, and was Rodgers and Hammerstein’s biggest success. The 1965 movie starring Julie Andrews as Maria and Christopher Plummer as Captain von Trapp won five Oscars, including Best Picture, and remains one of the most popular movies of all time. Team AFT finds this delightful production very apt to lifting the mood of people in Asia Pacific in a post-pandemic climate. As such, our team will be promoting this show as a part of Asia Fitness Today’s efforts to inspire people through the arts in song and dance. A truly international and local production Earlier this year in June, show presenter Base Entertainment and its producer Broadway International and local Malaysian rehearsal partner Dominus Arts Venue went in search for aspiring young talents from all walks of life. Out of the 400 children that attended the auditions, 18 outstanding girls and boys (six children cast in three rosters) from Malaysia were chosen for the opportunity of a lifetime to play the roles of the six younger von Trapp children: Friedrich, Louisa, Kurt, Brigitta, Marta and Gretl. In addition to the involvement of local young talent, over 100 Malaysians are involved in the international production by Broadway, working in all areas of lights, stage, coordination and food for the production, the hills are very much alive for the performing arts industry in Malaysia with this production! An all-American cast includes Trevor Martin plays Captain von Trapp, Annie Sherman is Elsa Schraeder, Jill-Christine Wiley is Maria Rainer with Lauren Kidwell as Mother Abbess and Lauren O’Brien as Liesl. The Sound of Music International Tour is directed by three-time Tony Award-winner and Broadway veteran Jack O’Brien, choreographed by Danny Mefford and music supervised by Andy Einhorn. The musical is produced by Broadway International Group, Simone Genatt and Marc Routh, and presented in Malaysia and Singapore by Base Entertainment Asia. How podcasts are taking over Asia – airasia.com

Kerry-Ann Augustin, Senior Writer at airasia interviews GIG co-founders, Jasmine Low & Nikki Yeo about their podcasting experience. View the published article on airasia’s website. Kerry-Ann Augustin: You’ve been working on three different podcasts – Asia Fitness Today’s Kurang Manis, Move8 … what triggered the idea behind each of them? Jasmine Low: In February 2019, I had won a second prize from the Motion Picture Association International Script-to-Screen Workshop Malaysia for KURANG MANIS (Sugar, Less), a documentary about six Malaysians who bare all about their hopes and dreams about New Malaysia and what it means to be amongst one in two Malaysians who are obese. The prize was a trip to attend the Australian International Documentary Conference in Melbourne in March 2020. We attended this and learnt so much about factual content-making, and it also opened our minds about content distribution. Although Kurang Manis was to be a film project, MCO lockdowns in Malaysia and filming restrictions meant that co-producer Nikki and I had to improvise and to launch the documentary as a podcast first. This is an impact project inspired by our own health, spurred on by national health statistics that show Malaysia’s alarming figures of increasing non-communicable diseases and the objective of the project is to entertain while educating Malaysians about nutrition and sedentary lifestyles. So we buckled down, and self-funded and produced the first season of Help! I’m Prediabetic! The Kurang Manis (Sugar, Less) Podcast which rolled out on 9th February 2021. Our first season includes an impressive list of guests; 2020 Australian of the Year, Ophthalmologist and Chairman of Sight for All Foundation, Dr. James Muecke who champions diabetes awareness to prevent loss of sight and also The World Games Greatest Athlete of All Time (squash) Nicol David among other stellar guests which included scientists and physicians. We’re now in the planning stages of season two.  In addition to Kurang Manis, we also produce The Move8 Fit for Good Podcast where we interview fitness professionals who use their fitness for good. Here, we speak about exercise, movement therapy and strength building from a physical and mental standpoint. Thank you, airasia and Kerry-Ann! airasia berhad is a Malaysian multinational low-cost airline. Australian of the Year 2020 Dr. James Muecke AM speaks to AsiaFitnessToday.com about how diabetes can be put into remission.

The Kurang Manis Podcast, Season 1, Episode 7 Type 2 Diabetes could be put into remission, says opthalmologist Dr. James Muecke AM. Almost as soon as he was named Australian of the Year 2020, Dr. Muecke started advocating for the implementation of a tax on sugary drinks in an effort to save more eyes. Dr. Muecke speaks to AsiaFitnessToday.com about his proposed change to Australia’s dietary guidelines, he expresses why there’s a need for government to impose a sugar tax and talks about his work in raising awareness about diabetes – a lifestyle disease that could lead to the loss of sight. Fitness startup, AsiaFitnessToday.com being Coached to Grow by Proficeo, a program by Cradle Malaysia

GoInternationalGroup.com has incubated AsiaFitnessToday.com – a fitness lifestyle startup since 2014. After 3 years of market research, development and testing out the product in the marketplace through fitness education and events, the team has rolled out the beta version of Asia Fitness Today – slated to be Asia’s No. 1 fitness media and activation company this Q4 2017. Asia Fitness Today (AFT) is one of 400 companies selected by Cradle Fund Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Malaysian Ministry of Finance for the Coach n Grow program (CGP). Created by Chief Evangelist Dr. V. Sivapalan and CEO and Chief Explorer Renuka Sena of Proficeo, the program employs a team of coaches, partners and trainers to implement the CGP. CEO Renuka has been dubbed the entrepreneur’s “Iron Lady” and “Guru Besar” (headmistress) by the CGP Companies she worked with – a label she has grown to love – for constantly demanding more from each and every one of them. Jasmine Low, Asia Fitness Today CEO and co-founder shared, “We have found the CGP program truly innovative and motivating. As an entrepreneur since I was 27, I’ve not had the time nor opportunity to be grilled by a Guru Besar and we sincerely appreciate the commitment that Ms Renu and her team have given us. An additional boon to the program is their CGP pay-it-forward program, that encourages companies in the same cohort to give back in way of service and advice to one another,”. Asia Fitness Today (AFT) has one MAIN OBJECTIVE; and that is to Move Asia through fitness – safely and surely. Both founders have personal stories on why they each have committed to raising awareness about the importance of fitness and health. “Fitness is not just the state of your body, but the state of your mind”, said Nikki Yeo, AFT co-founder and ACE-certified fitness coach. “We have developed a 100-day program for busy and sedentary corporate executives. It begins with simply changing a person’s mindset from living a sedentary lifestyle, to living one that involves movement, and feeling good about it. It’s only natural that once the person commits to moving, they would release dopamine and feel good,” she said. On 5th November, AFT partnered with the prestigious OCBC Cycle Race Kuala Lumpur 2017, organised by Multigreen Events. Team AFT comprised of a fitness coach, four physiotherapists and two doctors who conducted the signature Moving Asia Movement Prep and Warm up sessions to the 2,200 participating cyclists.
